GARDENING IN WALES |
| August:- General Tasks.Take Geranium Cuttings: you can take cuttings of geraniums (pelargoniums) at any time during the month. Choose shoots that are 4-5 in ches long, that are not carrying flowers. If they are bearing buds, nip them off. I there is insufficient growth, water and feed profusely and leave for one month. Leave cuttings in shade for a day to form callus on cuts to deter rotting before they root. Loam, peat and sand in equal mix is ideal. Dip shoots in rooting powder and skick 5-6 in a 6" pot. Don't allow leaves to touch. Insert 2-3 inches deep. Continue to bud Fruit and Rose Stocks: Continue to Remove Faded Flowers, Runners etc: Complete Trimming of Hedges: Continue to Secure Shrub Cuttings: Keep down Foes: see July notes; earwigs could be a special problem this month. Trap them in an inverted flowerpot filled with hay (on a stick), they will hide in there to avoid daylight. Continue to Feed Plants in Growth: (see General Work: May and June) Remove Grass Box from Mower: In July and August, the tiny clippings will help preserve moisture in the ground by forming a mulch. it will also help prevent the grassroots from scorching. Take Chrysanthemum buds: ie to secure the good buds you need for flowering. Remove all buds and shoots below them. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
