GARDENING IN WALES |
|
December:- General Tasks.Continue to Dig Vacant Ground: Sterilize Infected Soil: this can be done at any time of the year, but the soil may not have plants in it, so this is a good time of the year. Prune Roses: (continue as last month) as soon as all the leaves have fallen and can continue until March. Tea roses are best left until March.Cut strong young growths made last year to a length of 4-5 inches; weaker shoots to 2 inches and spindly wood removed altogether. Newly planted roses, as exhibition specimens should be pruned more harshly: cut back strong shoots being cut back 2-3 inches and weaker ones removed completely. Climbers are also pruned now. Shorten strong growth by one third, weaker ones by half to two-thirds. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
