GARDENING IN WALES |
|
January:- General Tasks.Dig All Available Ground: 'the early digger gets the crops', so the saying goes. However, it is not wise to dig when the ground is frozen or too wet. In these circumstances, just place the manure in convenient heaps about the garden to make your job easier as soon as conditions improve. Prick over Bulb Beds: during the month, tulips, daffodils and hyacinths will poke through the ground. Lightly disturb the soil between the bulbs to aerate it and destroy weeds and mosses. Dust with a general, blended fertiliser. Prune Roses: see November: General Tasks. Chrysanthemums and Carnations: take cuttings as and when you can and watch those taken in December. When the roots are over ˝" long, transplant them from the sand to a 2" or 3" pot (one per pot). Spray Fruit Trees with Tar Oil: this will kill insects (eggs) and mosses and will greatly reduce the summer onslaught of pests. Complete Fruit Tree Pruning: before the sap starts rising. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
