GARDENING IN WALES |
|
July:- General Tasks.Cut off Faded Flowers, etc.: from time to time during the month. This applies to roses, early-flowering herbaceous plants, bedding plants and annuals. This prevents seed formation. If you want the seeds, it's probably best to leave one particular plant for the purpose. Thin and Disbud Dahlias etc.: but only if you are exhibiting them really, otherwise you might as well let them grow naturally. They will benefit from regular weekly feeding though. Continue to Trim Hedges etc.: and topiary specimens as necessary to keep them looking smart. Take Cuttings of Shrubs, Alpines etc.: I'll get into this next year when I have some proper plants to deal with. Continue to Bud Roses: again, not this year for me. Continue to spray against Foes: Caterpillars red spider, thrips and greenfly are still out there waiting to pounce on your prize specimens. Destroy or ward them off. Fungal diseases such as mildew, rust and black spot will probably be more prevalent, as the temperature increases. Try spraying with Bordeaux mixture (whatever that is) or a good fungicide is the only remedy. Spray roses fortnightly as a precautionary measure. Continue to Feed Plants in Growth: (see General Work: May and June) Remove Grass Box from Mower: In July and August, the tiny clippings will help preserve moisture in the ground by forming a mulch. it will also help prevent the grassroots from scorching. Continue to Thin Seedlings. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
