GARDENING IN WALES |

July: Tasks For Week ThreeLayer Border Carnations: Increase quantities of carnations by selecting non-flowering shoots; slitting them partly through with a knife; bending them back to open the cut; pegging them down and covering the cut with sandy soil. By late August - early September, they will have produced roots, if well watered. Induce Wisterias to Flower: by cutting side shoots back to six leaves. Summer-prune Roses: bush and standard roses of the hybrid, tea and pernetiana types will benefit now that the first flowering is over. All stems that have flowered and are not bearing promising buds, should be cut back to about two leaves and any good compound lower-garden fertilizer should be lightly hoed in. Prick off and Pot Primulas, Calceolarias and Cinerarias: Start to Summer-prune Apples and Pears: Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
