GARDENING IN WALES |
|
March:- General Tasks. Transplant and Divide Herbacious Perennials: choose fine days early in the month. Always break up the larger clumps. If you have plenty of stock, throw away the harder central clumps, transplanting only the newer, outside growth, especially with: Michaelmas daisies, heleniums, rudbeckias and solidagos. Try to split by hand where possible or with two hand forks back-to-back. Only use a knife when absolutely necessary. Replant with a spade or fork in wide holes. Do not use a dibber. Prune Roses: bush and standard types. Lay Turves: on a day when the soil is not wet or sticky. Beat the turf down with a special wooden turf beater or roll lightly, first one way and then across the turves. Prick off Seedlings: Start to Thin the Earliest Grapes: The rest is mostly work concerning vegetables and greenhouses, both of which I will add more about next year. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
