GARDENING IN WALES |
|
November:- General Tasks.Tidy up Herbaceous Borders: By this time most herbaceous perennials will have finished flowering and can be tidied up for the winter. Spread bone-meal and fork in, but do not disturb bulbs. Perhaps the position of the bulbs should be marked. Dig all available Ground: Prune Roses: as soon as all the leaves have fallen and can continue until March. Tea roses are best left until March. Cut strong young growths made last year to a length of 4-5 inches; weaker shoots to 2 inches and spindly wood removed altogether. Newly planted roses, as exhibition specimens should be pruned more harshly: cut back strong shoots being cut back 2-3 inches and weaker ones removed completely. Climbers are also pruned now. Shorten strong growth by one third, weaker ones by half to two-thirds. Prune Deciduous Hedges: Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen. |
