GARDENING IN WALES |
|
October:- Tasks For Week Four.Plant Tulips and Hyacinths: These benefit from a good drying out, unlike most other hardy bulbs. Planting out in late October is convenient because you can plant directly in the recently-cleared summer beds. Dust beds with 100g /m˛ of bone-meal and fork in. Plant hyacinths 150mm deep, 200mm apart and tulips 75mm deep, 200mm apart. Pot on Greenhouse Plants: such as primulas, calceolarias and cinerarias; use general potting compost. Pot Annuals for the Greenhouse: you could also aerate them, if they have had 'heavy traffic'. Lift and Box Mint: list a few roots and lay flat on fairly light compost in seed trays; cover with 25mm compost. It will produce mint for Christmas. Keep moist at 50°F until shoots appear, then water more frequently. Make Lily of the Valley Beds: plant the crowns separately 75mm deep, 150mm apart in a cool, semi-shaded place with humus-rich soil. Not many birds in my garden now, although I still see one magpie every now and again. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen.
