GARDENING IN WALES |
|
September:- Tasks for Week Two.Prune Rambler Roses: most will have finished flowering and may be pruned. If they have made a great deal of new growth, much of it from near ground level, you can cut out all the old canes that have just borne flowers, but if there is not much young wood you will have to keep the best of the old and simply remove that which is worn out or diseased. If you have to do this, you must be careful to cut back all faded flower trusses, together with any heps the may be bearing. Weeping standard roses are pruned at the same time and in a similar manner. after pruning, train the long shoots round the umbrella-shaped training frames, which should be securely fastened to the stakes supporting the plants. Fix Grease Bands: in two rows around fruit trees and bushes; maybe 1-2" apart. There is plenty of greenhouse work, but I won't be covering that until next year Not much else to do apparently, most of the work involves vegetables, which I will try to incorporate next year for those, who require the information. Enjoy your garden! Regards, Owen.
